Thank You, Mrs Bush!

Today my sons began their new school year to the resounding and encouraging voice of the President of the United Sates of America! Wow, how cool to have the President speak right to you as a kid! However, such was not the enthusiasm of many of the far, and lately ridiculous, Right. Some have said that President Obama means to indoctrinate our children; while others have feared that the President was using our kids to gain political advantage over his foes. People were protesting the President's speech saying that he had no right to address school children, even screaming that he “stay away from our kids!” Is there a sane and intelligent voice anywhere on the Right these days?!
Finally, a well-known and respected conservative republican has said what was desperately crying out to be said. On behalf of all Christians who think and believe the way I do, former First Lady Laura Bush, has given voice to our sentiments. In an interview with CNN on Monday, the ever eloquent and dignified wife of the previous president said that it is "really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."
As she continued, it sounded like a blatant retort against the incredibly insane criticism of President Obama, and the outlandish accusations of his attempting to indoctrinate America’s children with subliminal messages of communism. Bush said, "I think that there is a place for the President of the United States to talk to school children and encourage school children... to stay in school and to study hard and to try to achieve the dream that they have."
In speaking about the protests of the President’s school-time speech by some parents, the former First Lady affirmed with gentle wisdom, "That's their right. [But] I think it's also really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States." What we should already know to be right, just sounds all the more true when spoken by such a graceful woman, who brings such an elegant dignity to the Christian name.
In the interview, she also asked about the accusations hurled at the President, which denounce him as a Socialist. And how did this Lady of Ladies respond? "I'd have no idea whether it's fair. Do you think I thought it was fair when President Bush was criticized? — not really. So, I guess not." How personal. How insightful. This is reminiscent of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. Imagine that, a professing Christian who actually lives by the words of Jesus Christ our Lord. If only our politics operated on the Golden Rule the way her politics do.
Thank you, Mrs Bush. You have reminded us that our Faith is meant to be practiced!
